Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are very common in society, especially in patients who use CIC or indwelling catheter for bladder emptying. To optimize treatment for these patients we have several ongoing projects. Firstly, we are investigating the changes that occur in the urinary microbiome of patients using CIC. Furthermore, we are evaluating possible biofilm formation on reusable catheters, as this may lead to more urinary tract infections. In addition, we want to establish whether there are alternative treatment options to prevent the unnecessary use of antibiotics. Therefore, we are looking into the efficacy of 1) bladder irrigation and 2) bacteriophage therapy to treat urinary tract infections in patients performing CIC.
